Sunderland Strollers

Hello!

Hello there, I'm Woody. I belong to Sunderland Strollers, a running club based at Ashbrooke Sports club in Sunderland, England. If you would like to be seen in a smart vest like mine, get in touch.

I'm sorry about the bag, but some animation company apparently produced a character that looks a bit like me and then objected to my picture! They said "Our feeling is that Woody distorts our copyright character." The cheek of some folk! Look here for the full text.

Stroller Information

We meet at 7:10pm most Wednesdays at Ashbrooke Sports Club, West Lawn, Ashbrooke,Sunderland, England. Check here for a map. But, on the second Wednesday of each month we meet at the Puma tennis centre at Silksworth at the same time. Check here for a map to the Puma Centre. If in doubt, get in touch to verify our meeting place to avoid disappointment.
All ages and abilities are welcome. We currently have about 80 paid up members, including about 15% women. Ages range from early twenties to mid 60's but most are 40+.

We currently have 4 or 5 groups running on a Wednesday. Fast, medium and slow runners do 7 to 9 miles at various speeds. Then we have the brisk joggers, doing 5 to 6 miles at about 9 minutes/mile and the slow joggers who do 3 to 4 miles at about 11minutes/mile. So, come along, give it a go, you'll not get left behind.

We also meet at other times but Wednesday is the best time to come along as a beginner because we have a bigger turnout and we go for a drink afterwards.
Other meeting times and places are:
Monday 6:15pm prompt at the underpass next to the Silksworth Lane/Premier Road roundabout. 4-5 miles steady run. Friday, Barnes pub carpark 6:00pm for a steady 7-8 miles. Sunday 9:00am Barnes Pub carpark for anything from 8 to 20 miles depending on which group you run with.
Feel free to turn up and join in. Mail Woody for more details.

Take the running as seriously as you want. Some members never race, just using the club as a sociable way to keep fit, others race most weeks.

Luxembourg We run mostly local races, but do venture further afield from time to time. In 2003 we have plans for the Tour of Tameside week in Manchester and the Luxembourg half Marathon in September.
The Luxembourg trip is a long weekend from 26th to 29th of September. Let me know if you're interested. Bring a friend/wife/husband for a good weekend away. Non-Strollers welcome. Cost is likely to be around £200 including travel, hotel and race entry. The picture is from our last trip to Luxembourg in 1998.

We take part in the local Cross Country league (The North East Harrier League). Last year we finished bottom of division 1 and were relegated to division 2. People with an interest in cross country are very welcome (and very necessary!) to help us get get promoted back to Division 1 this year.

Joining the Strollers will cost £5 per year and, if you regularly use the facilities of Ashbrooke (changing rooms, showers, bar), then you should become a social member of that club (currently £33.00 per year which includes £10 of beer tokens) but don't let that put you off, come along for a few weeks to see if it's your sort of club. If not then you lose nothing. If you like it then you can join. Also as a member of a UKAthletics registered club you will get a £1 discount on any UKA races you enter, not bad for a fiver.

To see what sort of runs we do on Club Night (Wednesday), take a look at our training schedule for this year.
For a previous years schedule take a look at 2002 training. For information on other British athletics clubs take a look at the BAF index and to see some of the places we run past each week why notVisit the rest of Sunderland?

‘HOBNOB’ PROMISES A TOUGH BUDGET

With the club AGM looming on the horizon City analysts are predicting a tough budget from Strollers Treasurer, Steve ‘Nobby’ Hobday. In response to the club’s lack of income from this years cancellation of the Redhouse run if you remember, it was decided to float the club on the stock market to attract more investors. This alas it would appear has failed as the clubs rating on the Footsie Index has dropped £14 5s 7d since 1st April 1997. Financial solutions to save the club from even further ruin would seem to rest solely on raising more cash from existing members. Amonst the measures being considered by ‘Nobby’ are:
1. Taxing any member who drinks cider (10p in the pint)
2. Taxing any home-made food that is brought down to the club including John Wilson’s donkey’s knob sized bap sandwich and Steve Ramsdens meat and potato pie
3. Raising funds by lining ‘Nobby’s’ pocket with 50p every time you finish off the left overs from the squash players scran.
4. Taxing Paul Taylor because he runs too bloody fast. and finally
5. Taxing the Strolettes every time they fail to turn up for club running sessions wearing skimpy shorts and crop tops
Clearly ‘Nobby’ has some wicked measures in store for us if the rumours around the City are to believed. My suggestion is to buy ‘Nobby’ I mean Mr. Hobday a pint to make him weak willed.
ANYWAY DO REMEMBER TO ATTEND THE CLUB’S AGM SO THAT YOU CAN HAVE YOUR SAY. DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED.

Winter handicap

We run a winter Handicap race on the first Wednesday of the month from October to March with only 5 races actually run (allowing for one to be cancelled due to weather). Previous years this has been the 3rd Wednesday, Coach Bob has changed this to the first Wednesday from 2001/2002. The course is on well lit streets with few major road crossings and is an accurately measured 5k. The initial Handicap times are provided by 'Coach' Bob and are then automatically adjusted each month to produce a new handicap based on the individual runners' performances. Prizes for first team and first and second individuals.
The 2003/2004 results so far can be found at Winter Handicap Results 2003/2004
Next months start times can be found here

Summer handicap

The summer handicap is run along different lines to the Winter handicap.
This year's Summer handicap series will be decided on the basis of performance in four out of 5 races listed below.

The hadicaps are based on an individual's best Winter handicap times of 2002/3. Where no time exists, a handicap based on present form has been given.

The Races (4 to count)

Ryhope Park race (18th June)
Penshaw Hill race (25th June)
Hylton Castle Park race (9th July)
Silksworth 5k (23rd July)
Hetton Lyons Park race (13 August)

Times will be taken from official results, points will be allocated at 50 points for the first Stroller in each race, 49 for 2nd, 48 for third etc. .

This year the winner of each race will receive a commemorative medal.

Individual and team trophies will be awarded at the end of the season. Teams of 3 are to be submitted to Wilson by the 18th June.

Sunderland Strollers Club Championship results

Each year the club championship is run over 10 to 15 races. This year it's the best 11 runs from 14 races. There are 50 points for the first Stroller to finish, 49 for second etc. with a 5 point bonus for a PB in any standard distance race. To keep interest going in the slower sections of the club, the championship table is split into leagues of runners of similar ability. There's a trophy for the winner in each division. Below are the league positions so far this year. For previous years' results look at:
